SSC CHSL Typing Test: 35 WPM English / 30 WPM Hindi – Rules, KDPH & Practice Plan

Updated: 2026-10-11 · 6 min read

For LDC/JSA posts in SSC CHSL, the typing test is a qualifying skill test held on computer. You choose English or Hindi in your application form and must meet the speed standard for that medium.

Standard (as per recent notifications): English 35 WPM ≈ 10,500 key depressions per hour · Hindi 30 WPM ≈ 9,000 KDPH · Duration 10 minutes. Confirm in the current official notice.

How 35 WPM becomes 10,500 KDPH

SSC defines speed through key depressions. 35 words × 5 keystrokes = 175 keys per minute × 60 = 10,500 key depressions per hour. For Hindi, 30 × 5 × 60 = 9,000 KDPH. In 10 minutes, that means roughly 1,750 keys in English and 1,500 keys in Hindi.

English or Hindi – which should you choose?

Mistakes that fail candidates

  1. Practising only 1-minute tests – your speed drops in minute 7–10. Do full 10-minute tests.
  2. Ignoring accuracy – fast but wrong text is worse than slightly slower correct text.
  3. Looking at the keyboard – it breaks rhythm. Use the live keyboard guide on our test instead.
  4. Not practising on a desktop keyboard – laptop and exam keyboards feel different; practise on both if you can.
