SSC CGL DEST Typing Test: 2,000 Key Depressions in 15 Minutes – Complete Guide
The Data Entry Speed Test (DEST) is the typing skill test in SSC CGL for posts where it is prescribed (such as Tax Assistant). It is qualifying in nature – marks are not added to your merit – but if you fail it, you lose the post. The good news: with 3–4 weeks of focused practice almost every candidate can clear it.
What is a “key depression”?
Every key you press to produce a character counts – letters, numbers, punctuation and the space bar. A capital letter typed with Shift is generally treated as producing one character. So the sentence The exam is on Monday. has 22 key depressions: 17 letters + 4 spaces + 1 full stop.
Simple maths: 2,000 key depressions ÷ 15 minutes ≈ 134 keys per minute. Since one standard “word” = 5 keystrokes, that is only about 27 WPM. That’s why DEST is very achievable – the real challenge is accuracy under pressure.
DEST vs CHSL typing test – don’t mix them up
| SSC CGL DEST | SSC CHSL Typing | |
|---|---|---|
| Unit | Key depressions | Words per minute |
| Requirement | 2,000 keys in 15 min | 35 WPM English / 30 WPM Hindi |
| Time | 15 minutes | 10 minutes |
| Language | English | English or Hindi (as opted) |
How are errors treated?
SSC evaluates the typed text against the given passage. Exact error rules and permissible error percentages depend on the notification and category, so read the “Skill Test” section of your notice carefully. In practice, three habits keep you safe:
- Don’t skip words – an omitted word is an error and also loses keystrokes.
- Watch capitals and punctuation – “india” instead of “India” is a mistake.
- Never add extra spaces or line breaks – type the passage exactly as shown.
4-week DEST practice plan
- Week 1 – fix posture & home row. 15 minutes daily of practice lessons, then three 1-minute tests. Target: 25 WPM, 95% accuracy.
- Week 2 – stamina. Alternate 5- and 10-minute tests on the English typing test (Medium level). Target: 30 WPM.
- Week 3 – exam simulation. Select Exam target → “SSC CGL DEST – 2000 keys / 15 min”. The tool switches to 15 minutes, turns on no-backspace exam mode and tells you your projected key depressions.
- Week 4 – hard passages. Use the Hard level (numbers, capitals, punctuation) twice a week, and full 15-minute mocks every other day.
Exam-day tips
- Spend the first 30 seconds adjusting chair height and keyboard – it pays back for 15 minutes.
- Keep a steady rhythm; do not chase speed in the first two minutes.
- If you make a mistake and backspace is allowed, fix only the current word – going back lines costs more time than it saves.
- Read 3–4 words ahead of where you are typing.
